Cough and Cold Suffering Relief
It seems that everyone has been afflicted with the viral attacks currently circulating. I have heard from many people who say that they have been bed ridden for several days. Here are several videos sharing some very interesting sources of relief that are not the pharmaceutical drug based suppressants and decongestants.
Coughing Fix: How to Suppress an Annoying Cough
Apple Cider Vinegar with Honey Knock Out Any Cold!
Apple cider vinegar + honey = natural cough remedy
Using raw honey that is locally produced is a very important aspect of the honey remedies. Cooking and pasteurization destroy many of the benefits of the honey. Locally grown honey also has the benefit of assisting in relief from local allergens.
Another beneficial practice is nasal rinsing, using equal parts of table salt (NaCl) and Baking Soda. A very safe level is 1/8 teaspoon of each dissolved in a cup of warm water.
Other natural aids for colds and especially head colds and sinus congestion and drainage include Bromelain and Wild Oil of Oregano. The bromelain must be taken separately from meals or it will be utilized in the digestive process rather than absorbed and used as an anti-inflammatory. Turmeric and ginger can be consumed also as anti-inflammatory foods. Turmeric aids in reducing headaches and heartburn as well.

The Love of Many Shall Wax Cold
And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.(Matthew 24:11-12)
Upon viewing this video I was amazed that the driver in the car was so alert as to stop. The danger was quickly assessed and proper safety maneuvers were enacted.
Then I was astounded by the same driver’s actions as he inspected the front of his car for damage, giving only a cursory glance toward the driver of the truck, with seemingly no concern whatsoever for the other driver’s well-being.
This sort of love waxed cold is becoming more and more evident today, at least in my daily observations. The caring that I remember observing as common in years past seems to be fading into the shadows.
At the YouTube page for this video a number of people commented. Some expressing alarm or disappointment that the man did not display any apparent concern for his neighbor. Others, however, expressed sentiments like this one:
You think YOU'd care about some asshole who almost just killed you? I wouldn't. I commend the guy for illustrating his apathy for the other driver's health.
This is very disturbing to me. I cannot imagine not caring. Furthermore, I cannot imagine praising such apathy. This is entirely alien to me.
My citizenship and mindset are not of this world, and so I suppose that I must simply accept that from the worldly perspective, I am the alien.
If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. (Colossians 3:1-2)
In times past there were many, especially in this country, who embraced this mindset. There are far fewer today who truly hold to this and indeed we are seeing the love of many waxing cold, just as the Lord Jesus forewarned. The more that the Christian churches muddy their doctrine and practice, the less grounded that they are in the pure preaching and administration of the Word and Sacraments, the less that God’s love shines.
This is not to say that even among those of other religions and corrupted Christianity and even among atheists that no sense of caring is displayed. One would be acting blindly to make such a claim.
For the law of God is written upon the hearts of all men, having been inscribed from the sixth day of creation, when Man was made in God’s image. Thus even in our corrupted state, we still show the dim reflection of how we were originally created. Even the various other religions and false Christian religions reflect this. This reflection is, however, very dim and lacking the true love that is of God.

For example, the yin and yang philosophy, embraces a dichotomy of supposedly complementary forces. Thus fighting styles and methods are often used to teach peace. This is a very, very different way from the way of Christ. This concept of peace and especially of love is expressed as a balance of forces. Not so for the way of Christ, where love prevails and rules the heart and life of the believer. Christ’s way is not at all harmonious with the worldly way. For the Christian love is not a choice. For the Christian love is the very essence of one’s life in Christ.
Such love does not wax cold. Such love prevails even when one’s reactionary response would be that the other person deserves to be treated with apathy or even worse. Even when the Christian becomes momentarily lost in the way of the sinful nature, the Holy Spirit speaks peace and love to the regenerated nature so that God’s peace and love again rise triumphantly in the heart.
It is sad to realize that many will never know this love of God in Christ. Many will settle for the worldly notions of love that depend upon a person’s own willingness to act lovingly and caringly. Even from this perspective, most imagine love to be merely an emotional response. Such a view of love is flighty at best and has no real substance.
The love of God is such that one’s enemies are blessed rather than cursed. The true Christian is moved by God’s love to pray for even one’s enemies, even as the Lord Jesus Himself did from the cross and as St. Stephen did as his enemies were stoning him to death.
In a world where even most who call themselves Christians think of love as a choice and often even as a meritorious work, when this essential article of Christian doctrine is obscured, it follows that the love of many will surely wax cold. Thus Christians will want to prize the pure means of grace and flee to them where they receive God’s love, His grace, mercy, and peace, freely as His gifts from above administered to us in forms that we can see, touch, taste, and hear, even as He Himself took bodily form to live, suffer, die, and rise again for our redemption, salvation, justification, sanctification, and regeneration to life in communion in His love.

Sinus Congestion
Accompanying the congestion sinus drip or drainage is also common, which can produce a hacking cough that seems to linger forever.
Today I heard a radio advertisement that many other people very likely have heard many times before. It probably is not anything new to most who will read this post, but it was new to me today. I only listen to the radio when in my truck, so my exposure to radio programs and advertisements is quite limited. On this occasion I heard the advertisement during one of the breaks on the Peter Schiff show, an Internet/radio program also new to me today. Actually I heard multiple versions of advertisements for the product in question.
What was the product? Advil Congestion Relief. One video version Bedtime Story is embeded below. Since I don’t watch TV, I have not encountered it before.
This ad sounds wonderful to anyone seeking relief from sinus congestion and its side effects.
However, one may want to consider the side effects listed at Ibuprofen Side Effects. This site lists three pages of side effects. Some of the more serious ones include:
- Chest pain
- Shortness of breath
- Weakness on one part of your body
- Slurred speech
- Allergic reactions
- Liver damage
- Fatigue
- Excessive tiredness
- Kidney problems, including kidney failure
- Fluid retention or unexplained weight gain
- Congestive heart failure
- Depression
- Insomnia
- Hair loss
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- Meningitis
There is quite a long list of possible side effects, some more serious than others.
It seems prudent to me that we all should be very careful about how freely we use these types of medications.
In the past I suffered from this kind of sinus congestion and drainage. Every winter I would develop a hacking cough that lasted for months. Several years I called our doctor and he prescribed a course of antibiotics which had absolutely no positive effect. Then he prescribed a second round of a more potent antibiotic that likewise had no positive effect. All I was doing was adding poisons to my system and weakening my natural immunity.
One year I asked at a health food store and was told about Bromelain, an enzyme extracted from pineapple. I tried it and my condition cleared up entirely within a week of using this natural product that has zero negative side effects. Later, my wife also experienced congestion and we added wild oil of oregano as well as the bromelain and her condition cleared in three days.
I later told our doctor this wonderful news and he informed me that he knew about bromelain. So why did he never tell me?
Bromelain and oil of oregano are natural anti-inflammatory substances. The wild oregano is stronger and more effective. For the last few years we have started raising our own oregano and use it in our diet. My wife also has started purchasing fresh pineapple and we have a portion on our breakfast plate along with banana and citrus and other fruit slices.
This year I had one slight flair of sinus congestion and drainage and consumed bromelain and oil of oregano for one day. Otherwise we both have been free of any significant symptoms.
To my thinking this is a much better way to live. Good food versus pharmaceutical poison does not leave me with much need for deep contemplation on the matter.

Effects of the Cold and Protection by Snow
The early morning of Feb 10 we hit a low of -17F. According to article below – this was the coldest night in 29 years, the second coldest in 106 years and the 4th coldest ever recorded in Wichita.
http://blogs.kansas.com/weather/2011/02/10/coldest-temperatures-in-wichita-in-more-than-20-years-overnight/
This is essentially a zone 5a temperature - http://www.usna.usda.gov/Hardzone/hzm-sm1.html
How will this affect us? Time will tell. We were blessed to have six inches of snow cover still on the ground this will help perennials that were covered. Gardeners in Minnesota (zone 4) can get by with some zone 5 and 6 perennials when they have adequate snow cover. Some shrubs may die back to the snow line.
How will this affect trees and shrubs? Zone 5 plants should be fine. Zone 6 plants may have cambium damage that can cause them to die back or die. After it got down to -21 in Feb of 1982, some zone 6 died totally, and mimosas leafed out then slowly died back to just the lower trunks over the next year.

Boot Dryer
Insulated boots are a great blessing in cold weather and in snowy and icy conditions, at least until they become soaked throughout. Wet and soggy boots loose much of their effectiveness.
This is my design for a boot dryer. It works very well.
The hair dryer must be used on the low setting, however. Otherwise the pipes melt.
Five Below
The coldest weather that I have experienced is forty below. I changed my mother-in-law's thermostat in her car that day. I thought that my hands would freeze solid.
Such weather does make me long for the Day of the Lord's coming to arrive. Even though I know that He is being patient for the sake of all who will be regenerated to believe the Gospel, still I become somewhat impatient on account of the pains of the cursed ground.
Growing up in Orlando, I was entirely unable to conceive of the day when I would speak of forty degrees as being warm. Before being driven out of the garden, mankind was free of such troubles. Sin has changed everything. Turmoil and trouble and wars and rumors of wars and riots and inflation and corrupt government leaders . . .
Yes, the Second Advent of the Lord will be a good day. Those who reject the Gospel and refuse to be ruled by the peace of God will be gathered up and sent to the place that has been reserved for all who prefer the deceptive leadership of the devil so that those who have been converted to trust and rely upon God and His grace will forevermore be free of all of these troubles.
Such freedom is beyond imagination except for the promises of God in His Holy Scriptures. No garbage about 70 virgins, as the Lord Himself declares that marriage and giving in marriage will no longer be the way for men and women. Our sexual desires will have served their double purpose of procreation and leading us to realize the greater marriage of God with mankind in Christ. Such anguish as the burning passions of sexual lust will no longer burden us. Neither will the freezing temperatures that often cause frostbite in relationships. No jabbing and piercing comments, no angry lashings out at one another, no selfish expectations and impositions upon one another, none of these things shall press upon us anymore.
Having called my next-door neighbor to be sure that he is OK, an elderly fellow of 90 years, I was informed that the weather channel report for the low last night was sixteen below, even colder than I realized. In addition to looking forward to the parousia, such announcements also make me very thankful for God’s gifts of house and home, shelter and clothing, furnaces and insulation. As the old gray cat walked carefully along the sidewalks that I shoveled yesterday and last night, I also was very thankful for the warm shelter of my house, as well as the warmth and comfort of all of God’s promises in Christ.

Amazing Striped Icebergs
The photographs are quite magnificent.
Amazing striped icebergs...
Icebergs in the Antarctic area
sometimes have stripes,
formed by layers of snow
that react to different conditions.
Blue stripes are often created
when a crevice in the ice sheet
fills up with meltwater and freezes
so quickly that no bubbles form.
When an iceberg falls into the sea,
a layer of salty seawater
can freeze to the underside.
If this is rich in algae,
it can form a green stripe.
Brown, black and yellow lines
are caused by sediment,
picked up when the ice sheet grinds
downhill towards the sea.

Antarctica Frozen Wave Pixs - Nature is amazing!
The water froze
the instant the wave broke through the ice.
That's what it is like in Antarctica
where it is the coldest weather
in decades.
Water freezes the instant
it comes in contact with the air.
The temperature of the water is
already some degrees below freezing.
Just look at how the wave froze
in mid-air!!!

Having the Internet means
that we get to see something
that we never imagined!
Pass it on for others to enjoy!
These are truly amazing photographs.
They cry out with the glory of God’s power, calling all souls to acknowledge Him and to recognize the absolute dependence that we all have upon Him. They speak to our fallen condition, calling us to count our days rightly, humbly confessing our need for the regeneration unto life that is in Christ Jesus, and administered through His means of grace, to live trusting in His grace.
At Striped Iceberg Photographs the Hoax-Slayer reports that the E-mail’s information is flawed regarding the formation of the waves. The report says that the photos are all real and that the information regarding formation of the striped ice is accurate, but that the “waves” have another explanation. This explanation appears to be somewhat lacking as well, but does help to explain the blue ice in the “wave.”
Nevertheless, the photos are spectacular records of the magnitude of God’s creation and His mighty and gracious hand at work. Of course, those who are often called “scientists” explain these away as natural phenomena. Yet their science (knowledge) is based upon deductive speculation, and is as absolute as those who make the speculations based upon their extremely limited collective observations and subsequent conclusions (which change frequently).
The truth, the basis of genuine knowledge (science), does not change. It stays the same yesterday, today, and forever. There is only one Truth, and He has declared what was and is and shall be. Those who look to and believe the Truth, don’t change their stories. They also find that the declarations recorded by Moses thousands of years ago, still bear up today, and bear witness to the Truth that never changes.
Anyway, I continue to stand awestruck at the amazing things that I see God working in the cosmos. Anyone that prefers to stand in awe of what the science of modern man presumes will have many opportunities to stand in awe of new explanations in the days to come. Have fun while it lasts!

The Endurance
The movie’s full title is: The Endurance: Shackleton's Legendary Antarctic Expedition.

IMDb lists the movie here. Wikipedia includes a write up entitled Endurance (1912 ship), and American Museum of Natural History provides a much fuller account of this remarkable story here.
“The Endurance: Shackleton's Legendary Antarctic Expedition” is remarkable in every way. Sir Ernest Shackleton and his carefully selected crew of brave and seasoned men, a crew of 27, 28 including Shackelton, undertook a very daring expedition that the elements of nature defeated, leaving them stranded on an ice flow. This was only the beginning of 635 days of ENDURANCE.
Every imaginable setback happened to this crew. For 635 days they struggled for survival and at the end, not a single soul was lost. The entire crew survived.

It is a story worthy of hearing. The movie includes actual photographs and film footage. Some of the photography is available here and here. It is a story of staying strong in the face of horrendous struggle and remaining unified. The example of the officers of the crew will leave you amazed as their personal sacrifices on behalf of the crew are recounted.

This is not your typical “based upon an actual event” movie. It holds to the facts, which are far more amazing than what Hollywood likes to invent.

Winter Blues and Pains
The cold tends to make muscles tense up and then they often bunch up in tight knots. These can cause pain throughout the body. When the muscles tense up through the shoulders and neck, a person can have terrible headaches caused by this tension, headaches that feel like they start somewhere in the back, shoulders, or neck and migrate up the back of the skull and shoot out through the eyes.
Several things can be of help.
Moist heat can be of tremendous help. The best that we have found
is a rice pack that can be heated in the microwave. A simple hand towel can be folded in half, preferably lengthwise, so that the edges can be sewn. Then the resulting bag can be filled with rice to the desired fullness, and the remaining edge can be sewn. It is usually best not to over fill the towel, as the fuller the bag is filled the stiffer and harder it becomes. Some flexibility is preferred. The rice bag can then be heated and then applied to the stiff and aching muscles. Depending on the amount of rice filling the bag, heating on high for a period ranging from four to six minutes works well. (For filling your hot pack, use the rice straight out of the bag from the store. DRY. Do not add water or precook. Simply use the rice as purchased from the store. The moist heat is produced from the moisture in the air.)

Be careful not to overheat in the microwave, for the rice will scorch. Also, it is possible to burn oneself if the bag is too hot.
As an alternative a damp washcloth can be wrapped with a towel and then heated. This method is more tricky. One must be very careful not to burn one’s skin.
Of course, a hot bath or shower is another relaxing method. Also, soaking in Epson salts can help.
Massaging the muscles also can be of great benefit. Massaging the scalp and temple areas, even gentle massaging of the eyes can bring relief. Often knotted areas in the neck, shoulder, and back can be gently massaged away. Massaging is not a quick process. It usually takes ten to fifteen minutes or more. Sometimes gently massaging the more intense areas for a few minutes, resting a few minutes, and then massaging a few more minutes can give a relax time for the muscles. Also, the area where the pain is felt may not be the area where the muscles are most tense. Sometimes the areas with the most tension may be several inches away from the area where the strain seems to be.
Stretching exercises can help relieve the muscle tension as well.

A quarter teaspoon of Turmeric, the yellow spice in mustard, can help to relieve many headaches and helps with muscles sometimes, too.
Oil of oregano helps with inflamation.
Used in conjunction with Bromelain, an enzyme extracted from pineapple, relief from sinus and bronchial symptoms can often be obtained. If the persistent hacking of bronchial drainage is ever a problem, this combination can be a very effective remedy. Bromelain alone is also very effective.
A saline sinus rinse is also very helpful. The usual mix is one eighth teaspoon of salt with one eighth teaspoon of baking soda in eight ounces of water. The saline rinse can be placed in the palm or a tablespoon and snuffed through each nostril. Be sure to do this over the sink. Most drug stores and pharmacies also sell a nasal rinse kit with premixed packets and a nasal squirt bottle.
With the nervous tension and the tendency to eat too quickly or too much during the feasting season, keep the Turmeric available for headaches and for heartburn. In many cases, a quarter teaspoon of turmeric will bring quick relief for either a headache or for heartburn. It is inexpensive and has no negative side effects.
Oops! Almost forgot Ginger as a relief from upset stomach and nausea.
