The Endurance

We rented and watched a video based upon the extraordinary true tale that truly exemplifies its title: The Endurance..

The movie’s full title is: The Endurance: Shackleton's Legendary Antarctic Expedition.

IMDb lists the movie here. Wikipedia includes a write up entitled Endurance (1912 ship), and American Museum of Natural History provides a much fuller account of this remarkable story here.

“The Endurance: Shackleton's Legendary Antarctic Expedition” is remarkable in every way. Sir Ernest Shackleton and his carefully selected crew of brave and seasoned men, a crew of 27, 28 including Shackelton, undertook a very daring expedition that the elements of nature defeated, leaving them stranded on an ice flow. This was only the beginning of 635 days of ENDURANCE.

Every imaginable setback happened to this crew. For 635 days they struggled for survival and at the end, not a single soul was lost. The entire crew survived.

It is a story worthy of hearing. The movie includes actual photographs and film footage. Some of the photography is available here and here. It is a story of staying strong in the face of horrendous struggle and remaining unified. The example of the officers of the crew will leave you amazed as their personal sacrifices on behalf of the crew are recounted.

This is not your typical “based upon an actual event” movie. It holds to the facts, which are far more amazing than what Hollywood likes to invent.
